The second-hand bookshop
Both of us reaching for the same battered copy of a book neither of us has since finished. Arjun let go first, which he still mentions.
Sixty people, one cottage, and a walk before dinner that we are making compulsory.
Both of us reaching for the same battered copy of a book neither of us has since finished. Arjun let go first, which he still mentions.
Arjun's family have had the cottage since 1974. Tara came for one weekend in 2023 and has been quietly rearranging the bookshelves ever since.
Late enough that the road is clear, early enough that the cloud still comes up the valley in the afternoon.
“Come up on the Thursday. The walk is the point.”
Sixty of us, one house, and a fire that stays lit.
Indoors, by the fire, with soup at four.
In the old dining room. No stage, no microphone, no seating plan.
On the lawn at eleven, while the valley is still clear.
One long table, one toast each, and the fire kept going.
