The order of things

Two days, one hill, and a great deal of stone.

On the roof in Mandore, at nine, with tea and far too many people.

Under the ramparts. Bring something warm for after eleven.

In Chokelao Bagh, starting exactly at sunset, because the light lasts eleven minutes.

Dinner in the courtyard below, running late by design.

Forty minutes, two strangers, one working phone. By the time the doors opened we had agreed on dinner.

Vikram's studio spent two years restoring a haveli here. Noor came to photograph it and stayed for the winter.

Because we have both drawn it, separately, badly, for years — and because it is the only room either family agrees on.
